The 6-day Marangu route is the only trail on Kilimanjaro offering hut accommodation. An extra day at Horombo Hut improves acclimatisation and summit success. Accommodation: Mandara Hut (dormitory style, shared)
Description: After registration at Marangu Gate (1,870 m), trek through dense tropical rainforest on a well-maintained path. Expect lush vegetation, birdlife, and possibly blue monkeys. Arrive at Mandara Hut (2,700 m) in the afternoon. Optional short hike to Maundi Crater for views of the surrounding lowlands.

Description: Leave the forest behind and enter heath and moorland zone. The trail opens up with expansive views of Kibo and Mawenzi. Pass through giant heather and enjoy the alpine landscape. Arrive at Horombo Hut (3,720 m) for overnight. Acclimatise and rest.

Description: A rest day at Horombo to aid acclimatisation. Optional guided hike towards Mawenzi (Zebra Rocks) or to the saddle area, then return to Horombo. This "walk high, sleep low" approach helps your body adjust to altitude.

Accommodation: Kibo Hut
Description: Traverse the alpine desert landscape, passing the "Saddle" between Mawenzi and Kibo. The terrain becomes rocky and barren. Arrive at Kibo Hut (4,703 m) in the early afternoon. Rest, hydrate, and prepare for an early summit attempt. Dinner is served early, then lights out.

Description: Start around midnight: ascend steeply in the dark to Gilman's Point (5,681 m) on the crater rim, then continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) – the highest point in Africa! Enjoy sunrise and breathtaking glaciers. Descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and lunch, then continue down to Horombo Hut (3,720 m) for dinner and overnight. A long but rewarding day.
